Burberry is a British luxury fashion brand based in London. The brand designs outdoor fashion and has gradually progressed into the high-end fashion industry thanks to the development of Gabardine, a breathable and waterproof fabric that’s exclusive to Burberry’s pattern-based trench coat and scarves.

Burberry was started in 1856 in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England by Thomas Burberry who was only 21 years old at the time. He founded Burberry on the principle that clothing should be designed to protect people from the finicky British weather.

By the 1870s it was a well-established company primarily focusing on outdoor attire. In the late 1890s, Burberry had grown significantly and opened a store in London. Until 1955, the company used to be a family-managed enterprise before Great Universal Stores (GUS) assumed ownership.

Burberry became renowned in 1918 by releasing a trench coat designed as a lighter option to the heavy greatcoats that British soldiers wore during World War One. The iconic trench coat is still a fashion favorite to this day and is considered one of Burberry’s signature fashion items.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Burberry signed contracts with various manufacturers worldwide to add complementary products to the existing British clothing collection, including sportswear, suits, and male accessories. These items were distributed in various retail stores across the globe, which helped grow the brand in terms of profits and sales through the 1990s.

Burberry clothing is divided into three distinct collections. Each collection represents different needs and is aimed at a precise audience.

  1. Burberry Prorsum

This is a high-end collection of Burberry clothing that comprises the designs showcased during the London Fashion Week parades. The pieces are produced in very small quantities and offered at high-end prices.

The main target for this type of product is almost wholly superstars, celebrities, and pro athletes. This product has high visibility due to its wide dissemination in the media as seen on stars. It, therefore, places itself as the ringleader of the brand at the general public level.

  1. Burberry Brit

This Burberry clothing collection exemplifies the core margins of the company as its objective is inclusive and wide-ranging. It forms the conventional collection of the house, which puts together both trendy and classic products at much more reasonable prices. It was initially made for the Japanese and Spanish markets and it now also applies to the entire continent of Europe.

  1. Burberry London

This line of Burberry clothing is for people who want to be dressed sophisticatedly for the week. It is a very urban collection that offers assortments that are more focused on fashion than Burberry Brit. Some features of the collection are now found in the United Kingdom, Japan, Portugal, Italy, Canada, or France.

Winding It Up

Burberry is characteristically British. The brand has gone through two world wars and has somehow still preserved its essence while still catering to modern streetwear demands. Despite new designers and controversies, the classic check print will always remain in fashion.

It’s safe to say that its future, as its history has proven, looks to be one of longevity as other brands find it hard to compete with its elegant and classic designs.
